Toyota To Build Small Hybrid In France


Toyota announced today that they will build a small hybrid car in France, apparently based on the Yaris compact. Toyota already builds the Auris hatchback in Europe, which is available with a hybrid system.

In a statement released by the company, the Japanese manufacturer said “This decision fits in Toyota’s strategy to extend the full hybrid technology to an increasing number of models.” Honda is expected to unveil a hybrid version of the Fit subcompact, that would directly compete with the new Toyota model.

The new model Over 300,000 Toyota and Lexus hybrids have been sold in Europe over the past decade. The plant will get a $70 million investment as part of the hybrid production plans. Toyota is aiming to have a hybrid model of each car in its lineup by 2020.

Lotus a souligné son partenariat réussi avec Toyota aujourd’hui dans le cadre d’une célébration à l’ambassade du Royaume-Uni à Tokyo, où le PDG de Lotus, Dany Bahar, a remis au président de la Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyoda, les clés d’une Lotus Elise spéciale animée par le tout dernier moteur Toyota 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i. L’occasion marque la fin d’une époque et le début d’une relation encore plus étroite entre les deux entreprise.

Dans le cadre de l’événement, M. Bahar a déclaré que : « La présentation du dernier moteur 2ZZ de Toyota dans l’Elise est un symbole de notre respect et notre grande reconnaissance pour notre partenaire, commémorant notre passé tout en portant un regard sur notre avenir commun. »

M. Akio Toyota a quant a lui noté que : « Un moteur Toyota dans une voiture Lotus assure une expérience de conduite absolument unique, un cocktail particulier mettant en valeur le meilleur de Lotus et de Toyota, et nous espérons que de nombreux amateurs automobiles continueront à vivre, et apprécier, l’expérience. »

Vu la coopération réussie avec Toyota à ce jour, Lotus a décidé d’approfondir sa relation avec la boîte japonaise afin de créer des solutions de propulsion sur mesure pour les prochaines voitures Lotus.

Pour en savoir plus sur l’avenir commun des deux constructeurs, il suffira d’observer le dévoilement mondial de Lotus au salon automobile de Paris le 30 septembre prochain, où le constructeur présentera sa nouvelle gamme aux médias de la planète. Toyota has released a selection of details on its product roll-out strategy as the Japanese automaker looks to move away from its damaged safety reputation and put the focus back on products. Specifically, Toyota wants to recharge its hybrid brand amidst an influx of electric vehicles (like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf) hitting the market.

An important player in this strategy will be the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which Toyota aims to price so close to the current Prius that owners won’t think twice about picking it up. Pricing may be as low as $28,000 – undercutting the $32,000 Leaf and $41,000 Volt by a significant margin.

The Prius PHEV won’t get quite the range of the Volt with a 13 mile emissions-free driving distance, but it won’t cost nearly as much either. As a result, Toyota hopes to sell as many as 20,000 of the vehicles in the first year.

Toyota product development boss Takeshi Uchiyamada commented at the product briefing in Detroit that in the future Toyota would like to offer customers the option of a larger and more powerful battery at a increased price.

In addition to the Prius PHEV, Toyota will also look to add six new hybrids models to its global vehicle portfolio. It is not clear at this point how many of those vehicles will be offered in North America.

Also confirmed is a new electric city car, likely based on the iQ, that will hit the market in 2012. Another electric vehicle, a RAV4 crossover, using Tesla battery engineering, may also arrive in 2012.

The RAV4 EV is set to make its first appearance at the LA Auto Show in November.

Le premier constructeur d'automobiles mondial, le japonais Toyota, est en train de discuter avec son homologue allemand Daimler en vue de fournir à ce dernier des technologies et pièces de motorisation hybride, a affirmé jeudi la presse japonaise.

Selon l'édition du soir du quotidien économique Nikkei, Toyota pourrait approvisionner son concurrent en moteurs et batteries en plus de techniques particulières, le tout en réponse à une requête de Daimler.

Si les discussions aboutissent, Daimler sera le quatrième acteur du secteur à employer les procédés développés par Toyota, pionnier des doubles motorisations à essence et électricité. Toyota fournit déjà l'américain Ford et les japonais Nissan et Mazda.

Un éventuel accord avec Daimler permettrait à Toyota d'augmenter sa production de composants pour systèmes hybrides, un moyen d'en réduire les coûts unitaires et donc d'amplifier l'attrait pour ce type de véhicules écologiques.

Les négociations entre les deux groupes dureraient depuis plusieurs mois, étant actuellement au stade de la sélection de pièces que Toyota pourrait procurer à Daimler.

Toujours d'après le Nikkei, Toyota et Daimler étudieraient également un accord large, englobant les autres types de voitures propres, dont les automobiles à pile à combustible, un mode de propulsion qui emploie de l'hydrogène pour produire de l'électricité motrice.

Toyota a cependant refusé de confirmer ces fuites dans les journaux, mais a réitéré les mêmes propos que lors de cas précédents. «Notre position a toujours été d'accueillir avec intérêt les requêtes des autres constructeurs (concernant nos technologies hybrides), en tenant compte de nos capacités de production et ventes», s'est borné à commenter le groupe.

Toyota has announced via its official Twitter feed that it will show-off an electric version of the RAV4 at the LA Auto Show in November. Referred to as the RAV4-EV, this vehicle is the first product to come from the tie-up with American electric sports car maker Tesla. Both Toyota and Tesla have joined forces in a larger plan that will see Toyota invest in the electric sports car maker, helping it bring its electric luxury sedan to market, while Toyota gains battery technology in a bid to compete with new electric cars from Nissan and Chevy.

In addition to that news, Toyota has also said it the Prius PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric) will hit dealers in the second quarter of 2012, with plans to sell as many as 20,000 units annually.
